Ken McDonald, Marko Schmuck have released a hack to the core SEF element for Joomla. Core SEF hack for Joomla will give you extended SEF URLS without using a component. Also supports the sef_ext.php files for advanced SEF URLs.

So basically rather than having the default SEF url like this h**p://joomlaseo.net/j103/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7&Itemid=2 or like this h**p://joomlaseo.net/j103/content/view/7/2/ when you apply the core hack and enble the SEF functionality via Joomla your URL's will look like this h**p://joomlaseo.net/j103/The_News/Latest_News/Example_News_Item_2.html

We have included the latest release of the core SEF hack in the repository database. Please note the Core sef hack is not an official Core Addon.

To install the hack you will need to complete the following but before you do the following please have a good read through the Joomla forum post

1) Backup all the relevent Joomla files from your server.

2) Rename your htaccess.txt to .htaccess and Enable the SEF functionality from the administrator area.

3) Just overwrite the files in your Joomla installation with the files contained in the zip folder.
